A Roller Skating Dream Named "Saturdays"

I dreamed that I was a foley artist on a movie and I was working on the sounds for a scene that featured a crab walking across some rocks. I kept trying to replicate that sound in the studio, but ultimately decided that no sound I could invent myself would be authentic enough, so I flew to West Africa in search of crab-filled beaches. I traveled along hundreds of miles of crab-less coastline before eventually finding a solitary crab wandering along a very rocky beach in Ghana, and so I busted out my recording equipment.

As I was recording the clacking sounds it made as it scurried over the rocks, I noticed that there was a roller skating rink conveniently located right on the beach. So I called up Amy Jeppsen, Kara Stowers, and Jessica Allen and told them that they should come rolling skating with me after work. They all thought that sounded fun, but told me it might take a day or two for them to make it over to Ghana.

In the meantime, I noticed that as I stood holding the boom mike over the crab on the beach, a cougar had quietly crept up and perched on a nearby rock. I was alarmed, but it didn't appear to be hostile, so I kept recording the crab sounds. When I looked up a second time, there were now several cougars sitting quietly together a few feet away. I slowly turned my head to scan the beach, and it was now covered with hundreds of cougars, all sitting silently. I remembered back to a cub scout pack meeting in which I had heard that cougars would not attack if you did not make any sudden movements, and that cougars couldn't swim. So I slowly put down my recording equipment and started to make my way over the giant rocks, headed towards the ocean. It was like the scene in "The Birds" where all the birds are sitting on the playground and our protagonists have to slowly creep past them, except instead of sitting still, the cougars where slowly inching their way closer to me with each step I took.

By the time I reached the edge of the water, the pack of cougars was mere inches away. I suddenly jumped off a large rock and into the water, provoking the cougars to pounce after me, but as soon as they hit the water, they floundered around in the water for a few seconds before awkwardly paddling back to the shore.

Just to be safe, I swam a few miles down the coast until I reached a beach with a big wooden staircase connecting the sandy beach below to a posh resort above. On the staircase I could see three figures waving at me, so I swam ashore and discovered that they were Amy, Kara, and Jessica, each with their roller skates slung over their shoulders. I told them that it was really great of them to come all the way out to Ghana to roller skate with me, but that unfortunately the beach with the skating rink was overrun with cougars. I suggested that we all go hang out at the resort, but they said they didn't want to go back because the kid from "Freaks and Geeks" was there and he wouldn't leave them alone. So we just ended up walking along the beach, hoping to come across another skating rink.

  1. I'm surprised that I came all the way out to Ghana to go roller skating, given that I don't like roller skating a whole lot more than I like ice skating (at least it's not cold).

But then, on second thought, the chance to visit Ghana probably provided some extra incentive, since I've never been to Africa. And it probably also meant that I wasn't all that disappointed that the roller skating rink was overrun by cougars.

I mean, hypothetically, if this had all actually happened...

  2. I love Freaks and Geeks. It even says so on my facebook profile. Your dream must have been a lie because I would totally go hang out with that kid.
Your dream blog fascinates me. I have vivid dream but can not describe them like you do. I need to work on that. I seem to get lost in time and space in my dream and don't know the sequence nor am I sure where they took place. Do you ever have that problem?

  3. I'm really glad I got to come too! Ghana seems very exotic for cougars though - and maybe they just wanted to roller skate too. Who knows?

  4. So what happened to your recording equipment? Were you able to take back the sounds for the movie??

LOVE the graphic!! Good work Mr. MS Paint.

  5. I think your painting of the crab scene was so much more provocative. I'm impressed with your dream-swimming abilites!
